A journey through time in bottles: What isotope analysis tells us about the age and pristine nature of deep water.
When we talk about the quality of premium water, looking at dissolved minerals is no longer enough. To demonstrate absolute purity and protection from modern environmental influences, contemporary hydrogeology looks deeper – more precisely, at the atomic level of water. Using isotope hydrology, we can today determine the physical age and origin of artesian deep water with precision.

What is Isotope Analysis?
Water (H₂O) consists of hydrogen and oxygen. In nature, these elements occur in different variants, known as isotopes. Some of these isotopes are stable, while others decay radioactively over time.
By measuring the ratio of these isotopes in the laboratory, hydrogeologists can determine – like a "chemical fingerprint":
- When the rain that feeds the water fell from the sky.
- How long the water was filtered through the rock layers of the Austrian Alps.
- Whether the deep reservoir has any contact with young, potentially contaminated surface water.
The Key Isotopes of Hydrology
To monitor the integrity of our springs comprehensively, two primary measurement methods are employed:
1. Tritium Measurement
Tritium is a radioactive hydrogen isotope with a half-life of approximately 12.3 years. The above-ground nuclear weapons tests of the 1950s and 1960s released a significant amount of tritium into the global atmosphere.
The scientific logic: If a spring contains measurable quantities of tritium, it consists of "young" water (a few decades old).
The quality hallmark: Our artesian springs are tritium-free. This is the physical proof that this water has been hermetically sealed from the outside world since at least the mid-20th century – and in most cases, considerably longer.
2. Carbon-14 Dating
For even deeper and older deposits, we use the classical radiocarbon method applied to dissolved inorganic carbon in the water. This allows us to identify water that has been resting in the rock for thousands of years.
